Blackjack is the classic card game where you try to beat the dealer by building a hand closer to 21 than theirs — without going over. Face cards count as 10, aces can be 1 or 11, and the dealer plays by fixed rules.

How Blackjack Works

  1. You place a wager and are dealt two cards; the dealer receives one card face up and one face down.
  2. Number cards count as their value, face cards count as 10, and aces count as 1 or 11.
  3. On your turn you can hit (take a card), stand (keep your total), or double down (double your wager and take one more card).
  4. If your total exceeds 21 you bust and lose the round; otherwise the dealer reveals their hand and draws until reaching a fixed threshold.
  5. The closest to 21 without busting wins. A two-card 21 (blackjack) is the strongest hand.

Rules

  • The goal is to beat the dealer's hand without your total exceeding 21.
  • You can hit, stand, or double down during your turn.
  • Going over 21 is a bust and an automatic loss.
  • The dealer draws until reaching a fixed standing total, then the hands are compared.
  • A natural blackjack (two cards totaling 21) pays an enhanced multiplier.

How to Play

  1. Place your wager.
  2. Review your two cards and the dealer's visible card.
  3. Choose to hit, stand, or double down based on your total.
  4. The dealer plays out their hand according to fixed rules.
  5. The closest hand to 21 without busting wins the round.

Blackjack FAQ

What is a blackjack?

A blackjack is a two-card hand totaling 21 (an ace plus a 10-value card). It is the strongest starting hand and pays an enhanced multiplier.

When should I double down?

Doubling down doubles your wager in exchange for exactly one more card. It's typically considered when your starting total is strong and the dealer's visible card is weak.

What happens if I bust?

If your hand total exceeds 21, you bust and automatically lose the round regardless of the dealer's hand.
